Thanks to its unique location in the heart of virgin nature, in a mountainous environment and inside the Veľká Fatra National Park, the Smrekovica mountain lodge is an ideal base for nature lovers. A stay at the lodge can be combined with observing wildlife and getting to know it with the help of experienced guides from Zaži Fatra.
Dinner with bears
- The accommodation package consists of:
– evening lecture on a given topic
– full-day trip with an experienced local guide
– accommodation/meals with half board - 1. day
The accommodation package begins with dinner and after dinner a lecture about bears, the Great Fatra, nature in the Fatra, fauna and flora in general. The priority topic is the brown bear.
– Let’s get to know the bear and learn to coexist with it.
– Is the fear of the bear justified?
– The natural habitat of the bear and how to recognize its signs of residence
– The difference between a wild bear and a synanthropic bear
– Protection from the bear and how not to meet it
– Stories about bears and our experiences
– Photos and videos of bears in their natural habitat - 2. day
The next day, right after breakfast and coffee, a trip into the field. The route lasts about 8 hours. The territory of the brown bear, getting to know its environment, signs of its presence, protection against bears directly in the field. Searching for bear tracks. - In the field we will learn:
– The difference between a commercial forest and a virgin forest
– Learn the signs of a brown bear
– A demonstration of bear spray and what is the best
– Rumors about bears and what is the truth about their overpopulation
– What is a bear tree?
– What should I do if I encounter a bear? Run, scream, lie down?
– Looking for bear tracks and, if we’re lucky, even observing them.

Additional information
- Clothing for the excursion: In the mountains, the weather can surprise at any time – whether it’s cold or a local storm, it’s common. We recommend wearing clothing appropriate for the time of year and the weather, and also packing gloves, a hat, functional clothing and a warmer jacket – it will come in handy if you’re observing animals for a longer period of time. High hiking boots and a raincoat or waterproof jacket are a must.
